Bullets and Silver

A CALEB MARLOWE NOVEL

In this gritty and action-packed historical western, temporary lawman Caleb Marlowe must face his worst enemy by fighting his own kin.

Colorado, July 1878. A solar eclipse is almost upon the country, and the raucous town of Elkhorn is one of the centers of national attention. In the midst of boisterous and chaotic frontier pre-celebrations, Caleb Marlowe learns that local power broker Judge Horace Patterson is targeted for assassination by agents of a financial magnate.

Caleb’s efforts to thwart the plan, however, are complicated when a ghost from his past shows up. Elijah Starr, acting for a railroad robber baron, will use any ruthless method at his disposal to clear the way to control a planned rail line to be built through Elkhorn. Marlowe is commissioned to bring Starr in to face justice after the assassination attempt, but he has his own burning agenda. Starr is Caleb’s own father and the very man who abused and murdered Caleb’s mother.

Caleb swears his mother’s death will be avenged and justice will prevail...or he’ll die trying.

“In a genre rife with larger-than-life protagonists who can do no wrong, Nik James allows Caleb Marlowe, the main character in Bullets and Silver, to screw up. It’s refreshing to wince when he gets distracted on horseback or fails to notice an inevitable double-cross. Set in 1878, in Elkhorn, Colorado, a few weeks before a media-hyped solar eclipse, Caleb agrees to serve as the bodyguard to a powerful local judge.
Later, he volunteers to hunt down the criminal mastermind behind an assassination attempt and its subsequent coverup—but only because the mission will give him a chance to settle a long simmering vendetta. The population of Elkhorn is peopled with the regular cast of characters: a brilliant doctor; a feisty love interest; two mischievous tweens; a kindly sheriff; the ornery town
drunk. Unique to Bullets and Silver is an emotional secondary plot that champions the rights of Chinese Americans following the San Francisco Riot of 1877, making this book a timely addition to the canon.”

“Quite the page-turner for me and I really enjoyed every bit of this story. It is one of those stories that keeps you wanting to find out what happens in the end and provides on the pages the adventures you look forward to when reading about those fighting for justice in the Wild West. A well-written story about a deputy bringing his father to justice and closing an open chapter in his past.”

”Another riveting read in a wonderful Western series! Caleb Marlowe is definitely a force to be reckoned with and someone you want on your side…not against you!”

“Bullets and Silver by Nik James was an entertaining continuation of his Western historical fiction series. Caleb Marlowe just wants to set up his ranch, but the judge in Elkhorn keeps hounding him to take over as sheriff. When his past comes back to haunt him, Caleb has no choice but to wear the silver star again.
I really enjoy Nik James’ writing; he brings the Old West to life. I love all his characters, and I’m more than smitten with Caleb Marlowe. He’s competent, determined, morally gray, he can shoot a man dead and a few chapters later bond with an infant. He’s not perfect, but he sure as hell tries his hardest. I also lived for the teasing banter and spark between him and Sheila Burnett.
Bullets and Silver was a great adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat more than once and found Caleb Marlowe gunslinging, fighting for his life, encountering rattlesnakes & wolves, out-numbered and facing down his past.”
